Continue reading »]]> After a brake of 5 years Sport 40 is to return for the 2012 championship

To me the demise of sport40 back in 2006 came as a big disappointment, but the
truth was that technology even for a sport class, had moved on to a point where it was
no longer accessible to your average model flyer and also not very club
friendly (too quick). The requests from Club flyers wishing to have ago at
pylon has been high for some time, we did try to run the Q500 class but to be
honest the models just did not inspire anyone even us trying to promote the
class.  With this in mind we started to look again at sport40 and located some of the plugs to mould the fuselages, word soon got around and orders came into PB models (Paul Bardoe) , which court Paul off guard he did not even have a mould and the first batch was sold! second batch has now been produced and I believe half that has been sold.

If you fancy flying pylon and want a great looking model that you can race at a proper
race meeting, that looks great and also can be flown like your favourite sports
model at the club site contact PB model for the latest list of models
available, it’s growing week by week. Currently in stock are Pole cats, Tazers
and Bummers Bullet ready for purchase.

There are a few basic rules which are as follows.

Engine must cost no more than £80, be of no more than 7.5cc, be front induction side exhaust,
have a carburettor and silencer , Simple.

Airframe rules basically any old Sport40 model/ F3D will do, the rules currently will
allow the use of old/second hand moulded wings, but this might be amended in the future. I can’t see that any advantage would be gained by having one, when you notice that the old sport40 record has never been held with one. So save your money.

A few test races have taken place at the end of 2011 season returning times
around the 120 second mark making for a very friendly sports class.

Following on from last years success, once again the International Electric Indoor Masters competition will be held at The Richard Dunn Sports Centre in Bradford on Saturday Dec 3rd and Sunday Dec 4th. Amongst the multiple competition disciplines you can expect to be entertained with Freestyle flying and demonstration flights from some of the UK and Worlds best pilots. The BMFA Northern Area Trophy is also once again up for grabs, for the best BMFA Northern Area pilot / team member.

Anyone interested in coming up for the pylon race class or just to spectate for the weekend and looking for accommodation. Take a look at Haworth, I live in the village in the hart of West Yorkshires tourist area which is about 15 miles from RDS centre. Its not only a great place to live, but its also a great base for accommodation, dining out and sight seeing, let me know what you want and I will point you in the right direction.

Aleksandr Kalmykov of Cyclon engines has a very nice range of Ceramic knives. All come with ceramic zirconium oxide blade and a clam to stay sharp for 10 years or more, it’s also claimed these blades will cut glass, steel and tolerate temperatures of 1,000 without losing hardness, don’t rust and not electrically conductive  (great for cutting live wires?). Several times at our practice day meetings this year we have seen Ali Mashinchy flying a very nice looking Dago Red electric model, after a bit of investigation it became very obvious to all of us that these would make for a great 1 make race class.

With costs of F3D and F5D models slowly moving out of the reach of your average aero modeler these would fit the bill very well, at under £200 for the air frame outrunner motor and spinner, you add RX, two servos,  4.7″x4.7″ prop and a standard 3 cell 2,000Mah Li-Po nothing special there! So for under £400 the price of a good sports model you will be racing.

If you’re interested and could see yourself having ago let us know, at the moment were gauging the feeling for it and if we can get a few confirmed (5or6) who would like to give it ago before the end of the year, we will be incorporating the class next year to fly along side with F5D and F3D. If you would like to come along this year and try your hand at flying the course let us know you will be very welcome.

Continue reading »]]> I have just been informed that the Lerner f3d engine is now in production and they are accepting orders. This engine is designed around the development and all that knowledge and innovations gained from Lerner F2C engine, very similar story to all good motors. First reports from Andrey Kiselev’s on the tests done so far, have shown this new motor to be very powerful and have good reliability, for more info read Andrey Kiselev’s report on the official website. Orders are being taken but for limited number of engines, this limit will be kept low because of the high quality of the product and time needed to be taken in production.

First reports on the Mo Racing pipe look very good, with a performance similar to the Dutch fat pipe, small power band and an aggressive peak rpm, first reports say possibly producing more power than the dfp and now with it having had many extensive tests and no reports of breakages. With a muffler diameter of 35mm it will fit most of the new belly pan cowling combinations, sounds like another good option.

The Missile Model Werke is where you will find the latest high quality parts for F3D racing, developed for the 2005 World championship effort of Paul Bardoe and Barrie Lever aka ‘Doctor Dago’ (known by a few other names as well but we will not cover those here!)

These parts are absolute no compromise offerings made in small quantities hence they are not cheap.

 Some people don’t like using the thin wing servo’s in F3D models, Christian Wolf who manufactures the Dago does offer a bell crank system but it has a couple of problems 1) the linkage from the bell crank to the aileron does not exit via the hatch, another slot has to be cut in the wing just outboard of the hatch 2) the geometry of the linkage promotes a large amount of free play in the aileron itself.

Not being prepared to compromise we set about designing the ultimate aileron bell crank system, the design features each bell crank being held on a twin ball race set-up this keeps slop and free play to an absolute minimum, it has less slop than wing mounted servos and you have the piece of mind of the ailerons being driven by your favorite high performance servo mounted in the wing center section. Fitting time is about the same as with wing mounted aileron servos, the longest part of the job is mounting the servo in the center of the wing. The small pushrods are supplied finished and the bell crank assembly just needs bonding to the wing top skin, the long carbon fibre pushrods are supplied cut to length and need threading through the holes in the ribs and the job is done. All parts are CNC machined to give consistency, this is not a cheap solution but is defiantly fit and forget.

 This fuel shutoff does not put any strain on the shut off servo and keeps the fuel line crimped even when the radio is switched off, machined from aluminum and supplied with linkage, wire and tube.

Retracts in F3D racing will become the standard in the near future, we have done a lot of testing to get a system which is reliable and works well. We use the popular east European retract units and these are the legs that we have developed to fit those units.

The legs are of two part construction which maximizes the space available in the wheel well, all that needs to be done to these legs is to mount the wheel and bolt the assembly into the retract and then glue the door to the leg, a little chamfering of the leg may be necessary to get the door to be a snug fit. In the event of accident the leg will probably break into two at the joint minimizing the strain placed upon the retract mounts in the wing. All parts are CNC machined; retract set-up instructions supplied with complete wheel sets.

If you are interested in engine tuning this is one way to check the various aspects of an engines timing, it is possible to check the timing of an engine by measuring piston travel and running a calculation, I have used both techniques and come back to using the wheel every time. The wheel is designed to fit the MB 40 (all types), supplied with pointer and fixing bolt.

In the UK F3D scene there seems to be almost universal use of the Radio South orange glow driver boxes, we have had a couple of problems with the orange boxes and this sent me scuttling off to the workshop to come up with something better, this box is the result.

Power source is a 8Ah Cyclon cell, do you remember those 2.5Ah and 5Ah Cyclon cells that used to be popular, well this one has got to be better. Housed in a strong aluminum box with on/off switch and ammeter, this is all easy to understand technology put together with extreme care and attention to detail. Seems expensive but have you checked the price of the FAI orange box recently ($105 plus shipping) our box is supplied with leads and small croc clips as in the photo.
